Frequently Asked Questions
In &&&&&&&&& Dragons, the players take on the role of characters in a fantasy universe where magic really works, monsters lurk deep in underground lairs, and adventurers risk life and limb in the quest for fame and fortune. As the game unfolds, characters grow in experience, wealth, and authority by overcoming perils, liberating treasure hoards, and making powerful friends (or deadly enemies).
How does the game work?
The game is played entirely via conversation and dice rolls. The facilitator (known as the Dungeon Master or Referee) describes what the players' characters perceive, then ask the players what their characters do in response. Players are welcome to ask as many clarifying questions as they want to ensure making informed decisions. This cycle repeats until the session is over.
What do I need?
Your imagination is the engine that drives the game. Aside from that, all that is really needed to play are this website, some polyhedral dice, pencils, and paper.
How do I gain experience?
There are a few primary ways to gain experience. To keep things simple, I’ll put them in a list:
- Recovered treasure earns 1 XP per silver besant (SB) in value. Experience earned this way is split between all party members, including a half share each for retainers.
- Slain monsters and NPCs count for 100 XP per monster HD/level.
- Investing your money into an organization or community allows you to double-dip experience at a 1:1 rate.
How does money work?
The world deals mostly in barter and trade goods—but currency is stamped in silver and copper besants. One silver besant (SB) is equivalent to ten copper besants (CB).
How does death work?
Characters are expected to die during the course of a campaign, but that is not the end of the game for the player. A new character can be quickly generated and old characters may even be brought back to life using powerful spells or exotic magic artifacts.
If your character dies with a retainer in their employ, you may continue play using that character. If you can recover your body, each silver piece spent on funerary proceedings can buy their XP back at a 1:1 rate. Consider using a bank in town and writing a will.
How do I heal?
Natural healing is done at a rate of 1 HP per full day spent resting in a safe location; resting inside the dungeon does not count. Spells and magic artifacts may also be used to recover health.
What’s a retainer?
Retainers are hired adventurers—not a guard, soldier, or torch holder—a hired member of the party that reports to you. Their loyalty cannot be taken for granted; treat them well. Retainers earn a half share of the party’s XP.
